Photography for cosplayers (II) – Processing pictures with Lightroom.

Greetings! As I said in my previous photography post and I as think it’s the logical next step after shooting, today I want to talk about processing the picture with Lightroom.

Lightroom is an amazing software that, combined with Photoshop (or not), makes us able to get incredible images. This application is a photo processor and image organizer that helps us retouch our RAW photographs by altering their original parameters.

As I said before, RAW is a kind of format that contains the totality of the information directly from the camera sensor. Thanks to this, we can edit parameters such as the exposure, focus, color, noise… without loosing the quality of the original picture.

(Video in Spanish again. There are plenty of tutorials in youtube for you to learn the basics of Lightroom in english).

As you can see, Photoshop is not strictly necessary to edit a picture. We just need it in case we want to make a photomontage or make some more complex processes to finish our picture. If we just want to make it look better, Lightroom is the way to go.

There is something important when taking a picture: totally black or totally white areas don’t have any information. A silly trick to avoid loosing information is taking our pictures slightly underexposed because it’s way easier to recover sligtly dark pictures than fixing a burnt one. If the picture we’re taking is overexposed (our camera will indicate if this happens by marking overexposed areas), those areas won’t contain information, so we won’t be able to edit them. In return, if those super clear areas come out darker, we can fix them by changing the exposure with Lightroom. This is very recommendable when taking pictures in which the sky appears, as it sometimes looks totally white.

And that’s all for today! Wish you a prosper Lightroom initiation.
