\neverybody! Today I want to talk about my brand new Rey costume, from Star Wars
\nThe Force Awakens. Those who follow me on my social media have suffered my
\nbipolarity attacks regarding my decision of making or not making this costume,
\nas I\u2019m kind of reluctant to make movie costumes
\nbecause I\u2019m scared\u00a0 of reproducing
\nreal people\u2019s looks and I feel like a potato in comparison with them. I\u2019m a
\nfucking potato compared with Daisy Ridley, plisu; but, well, I eventually made
\nit. I found some perfect fabrics for her costume and I ended up making it quite
\nhappily overcoming my insecurities. <\/span>Yay for me.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

This entry
\nis not going to be the\u00a0 typical tutorial
\nexplaining how I put everything together because Rey\u2019s clothes are pretty
\nsimple and it\u2019s not worth at this point to explain how I made a top, a pair of pants
\nand some hanging fabrics. However, this cosplay has some interesting details,
\nideas and tricks I\u2019d like to share with you such as the materials and the
\ndistressing process.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Before making this outfit, I read about its manufacturing for the movie, the materialand color choice<\/a>, to get an idea of what I needed to reproduce it with certain
\ndegree of accuracy.\u00a0 As you may already
\nknow, in this movie they used dark colors and synthetic materials for the
\nimperial guys and sandy tones and natural fabrics for the rebels\/resistance.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Luckily for
\nall of us, there\u2019s a thread in TRPF incredibly detailed<\/a> with references,
\nexplanations, and even patterns, to reproduce Rey\u2019s clothes and accessories. I
\nhaven\u2019t used the exact fabrics from their list, but you can check it out in
\ncase you want to be super accurate. I looked for some fabrics, but some of them
\nhad to be ordered from abroad and I felt lazy to do that. So my choice was:<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Raw
\nwhite knitted cotton for the top.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

–\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Grey
\nlinen for the pants.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

–\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>White
\ngauze for the bandages around the arms.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

–\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Canvas
\nfor her pouch.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

–\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Beige
\npleated praga gauze for the hanging clothes.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

–\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 –\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>Leather
\nfor the belt and wristband.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Once I put
\ntogether the basic clothes, I proceeded to treat them: I dyed the grey pants
\nand the gauze bandages using black tea to give them a yellower\/dirty tone. Dying
\nusing tea is really simple, you just have to boil water, add some tea bags,
\nremove from the heat and immerse the clothes for a couple hours to make them
\nget the color. I\u2019m really happy with the result. My pants got an earthy
\nbrownish tone that combines fantastically with the tones of the top and hanging
\ngauze and the bandages got a yellowy tone, so they look weathered and used.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After this
\ntea bath, I took \u00a0asphalt\/bitumen of
\nJudea and I made everything look dirtier by applying it with a brush lightly
\nloaded patting on the fabrics, emphasizing specially on the collar, sleeves,
\nbottom of the trousers\u00a0 and top and edges
\nof the bandages. I also distressed the pouch this way, using different amounts
\nof asphalt in different places to make it look dirtier than the clothes. I also
\napplied it on the edges of the belt and wristband. And I applied a very light
\ntouch on the plisee gauze fabric too, but I had some other special plans for
\nthat material.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

My plan for
\nthe plisee gauze was ironing and sanding. If you pay attention to the design,
\nthe clothes hanging crossed down from the shoulders look plisee on their upper
\npart but, as they get to the floor, they become flatter and more weathered. So
\nI ironed from the waist down and, to make that weathered effect, I distressed
\nthem by sanding till they looked good for me.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

As you can
\nsee, distressing this costume is really easy and it makes it look credible. I
\nknow it\u2019s sad to \u201cruin\u201d our costumes, but I\u2019m becoming more used to weather my
\nclothes to make them look more authentic. Try it at home!! Furthermore, it
\nhappens the same than with makeup: flashlights make everything look flatter and
\nsmoother, so don\u2019t be afraid to apply a lot, because it\u2019ll look fine in
\npictures eventually.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The only
\nspecial thing I did in this costume is making a pair of flesh-coloured spandex
\nsleeves and I rolled up and sewed the bandages on them to avoid them falling
\nevery five minutes. I made a crappy copy of my arm using tape and crumpled
\npaper to make it easier for me to roll them up. After making my firt photoshoot
\nwearing them I think I have to remake them and sew them better, because they
\nlooked messy.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The boots
\nare bought!! Aaaaaaaahh, you heretic cosplayer!! Yes, they\u2019re a pair of Po-ZuPiper V dark brown<\/a> boots that is the same brand and model Rey wears on screen,
\nihihihihihi. They\u2019re pretty wearable IRL though.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Taking the
\nchance, I\u2019d also like to talk about makeup. I\u2019m usually pretty scared of making
\nnatural looks because I think they\u2019re very difficult to achieve as you have to
\ndo your makeup and make it look like you\u2019re not wearing it and, besides that,
\nyou have to try to emulate the character\u2019s features. Tricky thing. Here you can
\nread an explanation on her make up<\/a> for the movie.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I used the
\ncontouring technique for the first time in my life for this costume. Contouring
\nconsists on creating volumes on your face by applying shadows (dark tones) and
\nhighlights (light tones) on some specific places. I highly recommend you to
\nlook for it on youtube. There are plenty of contouring tutorials and I\u2019m sure
\nyou\u2019ll understand them better than my explanation here.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The regularcontouring<\/a> consists on highlighting the forehead, cheekbones, eyebrow bones,
\nnose and chin and darkening on the sides of the forehead, under the cheekbones
\nand the jawline. This is the basic contouring that allows you to define these
\nfeatures and make them pop to look more beautiful.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Rey has an
\noval face, with a strong jawline and temples and high and angled cheeckbones.
\nTo emulate these features, I applied the basic contouring plus some shadows on
\nthe temples,\u00a0 high\u00a0 under my cheekbones and a line under my chin
\nto make it look straighter. And, to make my cheekbones pop, I applied a
\nhighlighter very high on them.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Conturing
\nmakes miracles! I recently discovered how to change my nose shape, that is
\nnaturally hocked and long. I don\u2019t have any problem with it in my real life, I
\nthink it suits my face, but it\u2019s sometimes annoying for cosplaying as most
\ncharacters have small straight noses (designers, please, hoocked noses are also
\nbeautiful). The thing is you can conceal your nose and even emulate different
\nshapes by using highlights and shadows. For Rey\u2019s characterization, I tried to create
\nthe illusion of \u00a0a shorter and straighter
\nnose by applying shadows on the sides, specially on my septum bumps, and under
\nmy nose, around my nostrils and a little upper. Then I applied a light color
\nline vertically in the center of my nose
\nand I highlighted the tip just a little bit higher than my natural one.
\nI also applied a light color on the sides near my cheeks to match their tone.
\nThis is crazy!! And, as I said before, you can find plenty of interesting
\ncontouring \u00a0tutorials on youtube. <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Once I did
\nmy contoruing, I concealed it conscientiously and I applied translucent powder
\nto set the makeup. Check out that, at this step, I\u2019m wearing primer, color
\ncorrection (green for the blemishes, beige for my panda eyes, etc), base, and
\ncontouring. I\u2019m wearing about two kilos of makeup and I haven\u2019t even started
\nwith the actual look.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

To finish
\nup, I changed the shape of my eyebrows by filling and defining them using a
\ndark brown eye shadow, I put my mascara, I used some rosy blush and a rosy lip balm.
\nAs you can tell, I have to make a huge process to get this simple and natural
\nlook. When I have better media resources, I’d like to do a videotutorial on this makeup.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I know I
\nstill don\u2019t look like her but, at least, I feel I get the look and I\u2019m happy with that.
\n<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

And last
\nbut not least, I want to talk about her hairstyle. Luckily for me, I have brown
\nhair and its length is pretty decent for this look, but I haven\u2019t got enough
\nvolume to make three accurate buns (the only natural one is the upper bun). So
\nI took a fake ponytail I had at home and made two weft lines sewn to a brown
\nribbon. This way I can attach them to a couple ridiculous tails and make them
\nlook decent and fuller.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
