Today I want to talk about how I made my SWTOR<br \/>\nShae Vizla armor. I don\u2019t have step by step pictures because I didn\u2019t remember<br \/>\nto take them each time I made some progress. I like making<br \/>\npatterns for armors the same way I do them for clothing. I mainly like making<br \/>\nchestpieces this way. For the rest of pieces, I wrapped parts of my body in<br \/>\nduct tape and used the resulting shapes as a base for their armor parts.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-645\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0004.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-04-1213.02.18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-04-1213.02.18.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-04-0713.25.52.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-04-0713.25.52.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">Once I made the patterns, I drew them on 10mm thickness<br \/>\ncraft foam and, in some cases such as the gauntlets, I used 3mm PVC foam (all<br \/>\nthe white pieces are PVC foam). I first made the chestpiece using a cheap foam<br \/>\nfrom the hardware store that had some relieves on the back, so I found it<br \/>\ndifficult to glue some fasteners. The rest of the armor is made using a high<br \/>\ndensity and flat on both sides eva foam from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suministroscosplay.com\/goma-eva-y-termoplasticos\/16-plancha-goma-eva-10mm-media.html\">Suministros Cosplay<\/a> and it worked<br \/>\nsuper nicely. They have a high quality foam that requires less effort in<br \/>\npreparing it for painting and gives it more durability. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-05-1213.49.32-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-05-1213.49.32-1.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">I cut all the pieces using my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B005P1TRAS\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B005P1TRAS&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=nebulaluben-20&amp;linkId=ebd00401cdc2b7a251a1ddb4f215b356\">heat knife<\/a> and I also used<br \/>\nseveral heads to carve relieves such as the belt lines, holes, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/detallesshae.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-649\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/detallesshae.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-05-1816.56.23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-650\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-05-1816.56.23.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">To give it volume and relief, I used different thicknesses foam<br \/>\n(mainly 2, 5 and 10mm) depending on the design. I glued the smallest parts with<br \/>\ncianocrylate and the bigger ones using contact cement. I made a stupid mistake<br \/>\nwhile making this armor: I first glued everything together, then I applied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00004TUCV\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00004TUCV&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=nebulaluben-20&amp;linkId=cba16781a7f65dbbe97d310321da4f3e\">heat<\/a><br \/>\nto seal the material so, while heating everything, some parts got slightly<br \/>\nwarped and I had to fix them and glue some edges again. So from now on I\u2019ll<br \/>\nheat seal the foam before even cutting it to make sure they\u2019ll eventually keep<br \/>\ntheir shape.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-05-1821.13.04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-651\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-05-1821.13.04.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">I used epoxi glue to attach the zippers to my leg armors.<br \/>\nThis glue is fantastic to join fabrics and foam. It also works pretty well joining<br \/>\nfoam, but it takes long to cure, so it\u2019s not very practical.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">I also sanded some edges and relieves.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-05-1813.09.49.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-05-1813.09.49.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0017.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0011252822529.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0011252822529.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">I also used acrylic filler and sanded it in some parts of the armor. Those white blobs in some parts are filled wit it.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0009252822529.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0009252822529.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">Once I put the armor together, I primed it using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0006SU3QW\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0006SU3QW&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=nebulaluben-20&amp;linkId=2da748b6783ef19b0a50e610cbddbc9d\">Plasti-dip<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis prpoduct sticks wonderfully to eva foam and, as every primer, it homogenizes<br \/>\nthe surface and prepares it to be painted.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/saheterminadaarmo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/saheterminadaarmo.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/shushae.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/shushae.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"104\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">I must say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0006SU3QW\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0006SU3QW&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=nebulaluben-20&amp;linkId=2da748b6783ef19b0a50e610cbddbc9d\">Plasti-dip<\/a> is not perfect for everything. We<br \/>\nprimed the Boba Fett helmet (made of urethane resin) and armor (PVC foam) with<br \/>\nit and, after masking some parts with tape to apint them, it was difficult for<br \/>\nus to pull it off without peeling the Plasti-dip layer. It\u2019s ok, Plati-dip is<br \/>\nmade for that, but you have to take it in account if you\u2019re willing to mask it<br \/>\nin some surfaces. It worked perfectly on craft foam. I even scratched a little<br \/>\nto see if it peeled off, but it didn\u2019t. Anyway, it\u2019s good to know.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG-20160611-WA0000.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG-20160611-WA0000.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">Well, after priming it was painting time! I used my airbrush<br \/>\nfor that purpose. I finally learnt to use it correctly and it works wonders.<br \/>\nThe advantages of the airbrush are that it paints evenly and you avoid those<br \/>\nhorrible brush veins. Plus, it\u2019s more precise than spray papinting, it doesn\u2019t<br \/>\nsmell and you have control over the color mixing. It\u2019s a highly recommendable<br \/>\ntool.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">I first applied a couple silver layers but I didn\u2019t like how<br \/>\nit looked, so I repainted the whole armor in gunmetal color. I don\u2019t regret the<br \/>\nfirst silver layer beccause it gave a nce base for the darker one. If I\u2019d left<br \/>\nthe armor black, it wouldn\u2019t had get that realistic metallic effect. I also<br \/>\npainted the red and golden details.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-06-2811.53.50.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-659\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-06-2811.53.50.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-06-2814.00.30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-660\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nebulaluben.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-06-2814.00.30.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666666;\">To finish it, I distressed the armor using the dry brush<br \/>\ntechnique, applying the light silver original tone with a little loaded brush<br \/>\nfocusing on the outer edges and protrudings. I love this technique, it\u2019s really<br \/>\neasy to apply and so effective. The important thing here is using the silver<br \/>\ntone even if you\u2019re weathering other kind of metals such as gold or copper, asn<br \/>\nadding rust and dirt on the inner corners and holes. Anyway, I didn\u2019t add rust<br \/>\nto this armor because I didn\u2019t see it in the model.
