Hi everybody! Keeping
\nup with my Shae Vizla entries, today I\u2019m talking about the Helmet construction.

I\u2019m bad at making helmets. I\u2019m scared of them
\nand they take an extra effort for me to make. To make this one, I boughtFirefeck\u2019s Pepakura model<\/a> and I modified it to make it using craft foam.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As you may already know, Pepakura is a software
\nthat unfolds 3D models and makes them suitable to be printed and crafted in
\npaper. There are two Pepakura programs: Viewer, that, as its own name says,
\nreproduces the model. And the Pepakura designer<\/a>, that lets us alter the model
\ndepending on our needs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Before starting my explanantion, I highly
\nrecommend you to visit Heroes Workshop<\/a>. It\u2019s the channel where I learnt how to
\ndo all this stuff.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Pepakura models are usually prepared to be
\nprinted and crafted on paper, so they have a lot of thin pieces that correspond
\nwith the edges of the replica we\u2019re reproducing. Craft foam comes in different
\nthicknesses so, to make a prop with this material, we have to get rid of all
\nthose tiny and laborious to glue pieces.
\n<\/span>I don\u2019t know if I explained myself correctly. Hope pictures make it

So, as I said before, I removed all the edge
\npieces from the template leaving only the structural ones.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Pepakura also let us change the number and
\nlayout of the joints between pieces to simplify the model (or to complicate it,
\ndepending on our needs).There are lots of possible combinations in each part
\nand you can change the disposition by selecting each arista and choosing
\nwhether we want to join them to adjacent polygons. You\u2019ll see that, trying to
\njoin or separate aristas, the program sometimes generates new ones in order to
\nkeep the relieves of the original model (that\u2019sa good thing), so you\u2019ll have to
\ntry till you find a nice combination. Explaining this is complicated so, check
\nout this tutorial<\/a> in case you need a clear explanation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Once I modified the file to my needs, I got the
\nbase helmet pieces clearly differentiated, simplified and ready to print on
\npaper.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

And here comes the next Pepakura hack to make
\nthe most of our craft foam material and save us a lot of time and effort: If we
\nwant to reproduce a model in paper, we\u2019ll have to glue together lots of little
\npolygons because this material is not moldable and there\u2019s no other way to get
\ncomplicated shapes with paper. But craft foam is a plastic material that can be
\nheat molded. So, after printing the model on paper, I joined all the parts of
\neach piece together to get the final shape of each piece. Then I cut the foam
\npieces with some extra edges (because at this point is difficult to know the
\nexact final shape), and I heat shaped it using an spherical object. Once again, you can see it clearer in this Heroes Workshop tutorial<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a very practical technique because it
\nsaves us from cutting, gluing a and sanding a lot to get an even and smooth
\nsurface. You just have to make a 3D pattern in paper and heat shape the foam.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I prepared the foam pieces in a
\nway the joints match the carved lines along the helmet so, once again, I
\navoided needlessly sanding.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Once I had the basic shape together, I added
\nthe details. For example, I glued the lateral ornaments on a plastic circle so
\nthe LED lights would be visible trough. I filled and sanded the seams.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

To finish it, I used the heat knife to carve
\nthe lines along the structure.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The viewfinder is made with several materials:
\na clear 3mm PVC sheet over a yellow acetate and a silver solar sheet to give it
\nthat metallic look. Solar sheets are super cool because they let you see quite
\nwell from the inside but they can\u2019t see you from the outside, so you can get
\nthat intriguing and futuristic look.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Once again, I used the heat knife<\/a> to carve some
\ndetails on the viewfinder.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Assembling it was tough because, it doesn\u2019t
\nmatter how accurate the patterns are, errors accumulate during the construction
\nand nothing fits perfectly. I ended up opening a rail in the adjacent edges
\nwith the heat knife and I inlayed it. It was difficult to inlay because, once I
\nhad one side inside, the other one popped out. But I finally made it and I
\nfixed it with cianocrylate.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Last but not least, I assembled the
\nrangefinder. I used a couple neodymium magnets (another new material for me
\nthat I\u2019m definitely using a lot more) to make it detachable to avoid ruining it
\ninside the bag. Then I added the servomotor and all the electronic
\nparaphernalia that I\u2019ll explain in the upcoming entries. By now I think you
\nhave a lot of information to process.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
